A floppy disk is a recording medium composed of a disk of thin flexible ("floppy") magnetic data storage material encased in a rectangular cover.

Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy drive. While floppy drives still have some limited uses, especially with legacy computer equipment, they have now been largely superseded by USB flash drives, external hard drives and optical disk drives.
